Electric scooter: worn handlebar lock, damaged folding pin and play in the handlebar
If the scooter's handlebar does not lock after unfolding, has noticeable play, or the folding pin or cotter pin has broken, do not ride until the mechanism has been repaired. Worn or broken lock parts and the folding pin are replaced with new ones. Play that is not caused by damaged parts is usually removed by tightening bolts or adjusting the mechanism. Adjustment only works if the components are mechanically sound. Below we describe how to check the problem safely without opening the battery or electronics.
This advice is based on solutions to specific, anonymised cases handled by Amperi Service. Every case can be different – the steps described do not replace a professional service diagnosis.
Symptoms
- The handlebar does not lock in the riding position after the scooter is unfolded.
- The latch or steering lock is broken, cracked or worn.
- The handlebar has a lot of play, especially in the lower section near the front wheel.
- Knocking can be heard around the folding mechanism when riding or braking.
- The handlebar folding pin is bent, cracked or loose.
- The safety cotter pin broke off while the scooter was being folded.
- Some fixings, such as a wheel, are held on by too few bolts or have bolts missing.
Possible causes
- Mechanical wear of the lock components from frequent folding and unfolding.
- A broken latch or steering lock after an impact, a fall, or folding the scooter with force.
- Damage to the handlebar folding pin from overload or wear.
- The safety cotter pin breaking off during folding.
- Loose or missing bolts, which cause play in the structure (vibration while riding gradually loosens fixings).
- Worn bushings, steering headset bearings, or fork and wheel-axle fixings, which can give play that feels like folding-mechanism play.
- Dirt and sand in the folding mechanism, which prevent the lock from closing fully.
What you can check
- Stop riding if the handlebar does not lock in the riding position or has obvious play. A loose handlebar can cause you to lose control of the scooter.
- Switch the scooter off and unfold it on a flat, stable surface.
- Visually inspect the latch, steering lock, folding pin and cotter pin. Look for cracks, deformation, broken-off fragments and missing parts.
- Check whether the lock closes fully (the lever should engage its catch with no visible gap, and any secondary safety lock should click into place). Fold and unfold the scooter gently, without force.
- Check for play with the scooter switched off: hold the front wheel and gently move the handlebar forwards and backwards and from side to side. Note where the play can be felt: at the folding mechanism, halfway up, in the lower section near the wheel (this may be steering headset or fork play), or at a wheel fixing.
- Clean dirt and sand out of the folding mechanism (dry brush, clean cloth), then check whether the lock works correctly. Do not use a pressure washer on the mechanism.
- Check the externally accessible bolts and nuts (including those near the wheels). Tighten any loose ones with a suitable tool, preferably to the torque in the manufacturer's manual, without excessive force. Overtightening can strip threads or damage the clamp and latch. Make sure no bolt has been left out or is missing from a wheel fixing.
- Do not open the battery casing or the electronics, and do not interfere with the electrical system.
- Do not replace a broken pin or cotter pin with an improvised substitute such as wire or a random bolt. Do not compensate for damaged parts by overtightening or by fitting improvised spacers. The safety part must be original or specified by the manufacturer for your model.
- If there is play, record a short video and take photos showing where it can be seen. This helps with assessing the fault.
- Do not use the scooter until it has been repaired. Carry a folding scooter carefully and do not fold it if the mechanism is damaged.
Follow safety rules when working with batteries and electrical equipment. Do not open batteries or high-voltage electronics. Unauthorised modifications to the equipment during the warranty period may void the warranty.
When to contact the service
Servicing is needed when a lock component, the folding pin or the cotter pin is broken, cracked or worn, when the lock does not close after the mechanism has been cleaned, or when play in the handlebar does not go away after tightening the accessible bolts. The same applies if a bolt is missing from a wheel fixing, if cracks or deformation are visible, or if play returns after adjustment. In such cases the damaged parts are replaced, and where the components are sound, play is removed by adjustment. The wheel fixings, steering headset and brake operation are usually checked at the same time.
FAQ
Can I ride the scooter if the handlebar lock does not close?
No. A handlebar that is not locked in the riding position may fold or move while you are riding, which risks a fall.
What should I do if the cotter pin broke off while folding?
Do not use the scooter and do not replace the cotter pin with a random part or an improvised fix. Contact the manufacturer, the seller or a service centre about the original or recommended part for your model. Give the scooter model and attach photos of the damage.
What causes a lot of play in the lower part of the handlebar near the wheel?
Most often loose bolts and fixing elements, play in the folding mechanism, worn steering headset bearings, or play at the fork and front wheel axle. There should be no play in this place. If it does not go away after tightening the accessible bolts, have the scooter serviced.
Can a folding pin be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
A damaged handlebar folding pin is replaced with a new one. It should not be straightened or patched up, because it is responsible for holding the handlebar securely.
When the folding mechanism is being repaired, is it worth checking the wheels and brake too?
Yes. While the scooter is being repaired, check that all the bolts holding the wheels are present and tight. If a missing bolt is added, the brake operation should be checked and adjusted as well.
