Display not working or showing errors (E07, E-006, E10) – what to check on an electric scooter or kick scooter
A black screen at start-up or error codes such as E07, E-006 or E10 usually point to a problem with the power supply, the display, the controller, the wiring, the throttle or the motor. The meaning of a code depends on the model and manufacturer. The owner can safely check the basics: restart the vehicle, check the charge level, look for visible external damage and document the symptoms carefully. Replacing the display or controller, and inspecting the wiring inside the vehicle, is a job for a service centre.
This advice is based on solutions to specific, anonymised cases handled by Amperi Service. Every case can be different – the steps described do not replace a professional service diagnosis.
Symptoms
- The display stays black after the scooter or kick scooter is switched on, both before and after start-up.
- The display shows an error code, for example E07, E-006 or E10.
- The vehicle switches on, but an error appears when the throttle is pressed and the vehicle does not respond to it.
- The display shows unusual indications (for example "00" and "07") instead of the normal readings.
Possible causes
- No power or a weak battery: with a black screen, first rule out the power supply, fuse, charger and loose connections. A charged battery does not prove that the display, wiring and controller are working.
- A faulty display: in one case a black screen was resolved by replacing the display. This is not a rule, because a black screen can also come from the power supply or the connections.
- A faulty controller: with error E-006 and no response to the throttle, the cause in the described case was a damaged controller, and the repair was to replace it. On other models the same symptom can have other causes, for example the throttle.
- A problem with the wiring or connectors between the controller and the other components (display, throttle, motor): for error E07, the service centre asked for photos of the controller and wiring harness so it could assess the connections. On many models E07 also relates to the motor (for example Hall sensors or motor cables) or the throttle.
- Loss of communication between the controller and the display or throttle, low battery voltage under load, or overheating: this is how E10 is interpreted on some models. Moisture and corroded connectors can cause similar symptoms.
- The meaning of codes differs between models and manufacturers, so a code alone does not point unambiguously to a fault (this applies to E07, E-006 and E10 alike).
What you can check
- Switch the vehicle off, wait about a minute and switch it on again. Check whether the screen lights up or whether the error code returns. Remember that a code disappearing after a restart does not prove the cause has been fixed.
- If the code appeared after a long ride uphill, under heavy load or in hot weather, switch the vehicle off and let it cool for 15–30 minutes. Then try again.
- Check that the vehicle is sufficiently charged. If necessary, charge it with the original charger according to the manual and try again after charging has finished. Do not charge or use the vehicle if the battery is swollen, noticeably hot or smells burnt, or if the charger or charging port is visibly damaged.
- With the vehicle switched off, inspect the display, the throttle and the visible cables from the outside. Look for cracks, signs of moisture, and unplugged or frayed connectors. Do not unscrew anything or open casings containing electronics or the battery.
- Write down the exact error code and the circumstances in which it appears, for example immediately after switch-on, only after pressing the throttle, or after several minutes of riding.
- Check the owner's manual or service manual for your model to see what the code means. Do not assume the meaning from other models.
- Take photos or a short video of the display in three states: vehicle off, during switch-on (the power-on self-test) and after switch-on. If an error code appears, capture the moment it shows.
- Have the vehicle's VIN or serial number and a description of the symptoms ready so the service centre can verify them quickly. Give these details only to the service centre, not in public posts.
- If the vehicle does not respond to the throttle, the display goes out while riding, or the vehicle behaves unpredictably, do not ride it until it has been diagnosed.
- Do not replace the controller or display yourself, and do not reconnect any plugs inside the vehicle. Do not fit replacement parts of unknown compatibility (connector, communication protocol). Leave this to the service centre.
Follow safety rules when working with batteries and electrical equipment. Do not open batteries or high-voltage electronics. Unauthorised modifications to the equipment during the warranty period may void the warranty.
When to contact the service
Go to a service centre if the screen stays black after a restart, the error code returns after a restart, the vehicle does not respond to the throttle, or you can see damaged cables or connectors. Stop using and charging the vehicle immediately if the battery is swollen or hot or there is a burning smell. The service centre may ask for photos or a video of the symptoms and, in some cases, for documentation of the wiring harness and controller. For older models that are no longer manufactured, the availability of a display or controller may be limited, which affects whether a repair is possible.
FAQ
What does error E07 mean?
The meaning of the code depends on the vehicle model, so check it in the manual for your model. On many scooters E07 relates to communication between the controller and the motor (for example Hall sensors or cables) or the throttle, while other systems use it for something else. In reports involving E07, the service centre assessed the controller and its wiring and connectors.
What does error E-006 mean when the vehicle does not respond to the throttle?
The meaning depends on the model. In the cases described, error E-006 appearing after the throttle was pressed, with no response from the vehicle, was caused by a faulty controller, and the repair was to replace it. This does not mean the cause is the same on every vehicle. The diagnosis should be confirmed by a service centre.
What does error E10 mean?
E10 has no single universal meaning. On some models it means lost communication between the controller and the display or throttle, and on others low battery voltage under load or overheating. Check it in the manual for your model and note the circumstances in which it appears.
Does a black screen always mean a faulty display?
No. In one of the cases described the fault was fixed by replacing the display, but the cause can also be the power supply (battery, fuse), loose or corroded connections, or the controller. The diagnosis should be confirmed by a service centre before you buy a new display.
Which photos help with diagnosis?
The most helpful are photos or a video of the display with the vehicle off, during switch-on and after switch-on, including the moment the error code appears.
Can I open the vehicle and check the controller myself?
We do not recommend it. The controller and wiring are in the electronics area, close to the lithium-ion battery, and they should be assessed and replaced by a service centre.
